The commonest cause of drooping eyelids is as a result of ageing, which can stretch the tendon and muscle of the eyelid.

Drooping eyelids can also occur after contact lens wear, following an injury or previous surgery to the eye (e.g. cataracts) or as a manifestation of another disease involving the eyelid muscle or its nerve supply, e.g. myasthenia gravis or third nerve palsy in diabetes.

Drooping eyelids can also become a cosmetic issue, affecting a person’s self-esteem and making them avoid having their photograph taken, as the ptosis often looks more pronounced in photographs.

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure of raising the drooping skin on or around the eyelid area for a more awake and refreshed appearance. By removing excess skin, fat or muscle, the procedure provides restoration of the periorbital region. An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both upper and lower eyelids at the same time. Blepharoplasty can also be combined with facial fat grafting and/or laser resurfacing for even more enhanced results.
