The face is the first thing that people notice and having a not-so-perfect facial feature and complexion can somehow dampen one’s self-esteem. It can be baggy eyelids, rough skin texture or sunken and droopy cheeks.

Plastic surgery address multiple areas to improve and achieve the best facial and skin rejuvenation treatments. Below, we will discuss the most common facial rejuvenation treatments available at the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery.

BOTOX and FILLER

Botox and Dermal Fillers are the most widely used treatment to rejuvenate the skin non-invasively.

Botox involves the injection of botulinum toxin which primarily freezes the muscles, thus, smoothening the appearance of lines and wrinkles. A session every 3-4 months is required to maintain rejuvenation. The effects are apparent after a couple of weeks when the botulinum toxin is at its peak.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used for deeper lines (around the mouth) and for lip augmentation. The result of fillers is immediate. Depending on which type of fillers used, they can last as short as six months or as long as a couple of years.

LASER RESURFACING

Laser resurfacing involves the precise application of laser beam onto the skin which effectively removes, in thin layers, the outer portion of the skin. This removal forces the body to create new skin cells that are smoother in texture and appearance.

Laser resurfacing not only improves skin texture but is also considered as a treatment for acne scars and wrinkles. The number of session for laser resurfacing depends on the effect of the previous treatment, but generally, it can be done every six to eights weeks with a total of two to three sessions.

Although laser resurfacing has the disadvantage of having downtime (typically 2 to 3 weeks), the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

EYELID SURGERY

Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty is a great procedure to rejuvenate the face, especially around the eyes. As we age, collagen production decreases which leads to loose and saggy skin. The skin around the eyes is no exception. Sometimes, the upper eyelids drape on the eyes, hindering one’s vision.

Eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess skin and sometimes fat on the upper and/or lower eyelids. The surgery can be done as a day case under sedation. Sedation is a type of anaesthesia where patient recovery is quick and fewer complications when compared to general anaesthesia. Blepharoplasty generally lasts for an hour and a half (either upper or lower eyelids) to a couple of hours (both upper and lower blepharoplasty).

FACELIFT

Ideally, a facelift is for individuals who want longer lasting facial rejuvenation with proven effective result. It is also for patients who have prominent loose skin on the middle and lower third of the face.

Like the eyelid surgery, a facelift can be done under sedation. The surgery lasts from two to two and a half hours and involves permanent sutures that are anchored to a tough ligament on the temporal area. This anchoring gives the “lifting” effect of the face.

The downtime is generally a couple of weeks as the face heals, however, even as early as a few days, the result is evident and will continue to improve when the swelling goes completely down.

The facelift is by far the most invasive among the facial rejuvenation because it involves a scar that runs along the side of the temporal area going to behind the ear.
